Correction:

Yes, we're on hiatus. NO, we're not deleting the site. We just won't be able to stick to a regular posting schedule until we get things better under-control. Sorry for the inconvenience of this all. Laura is rather overloaded right now, so if you have questions, please PM me directly.

Thank you all for your patience.

Session Two! (finally -_-)

Yipes, we've gotten behind! RL just decided to be extra-spicy this month. We considered making a longer session this week as an attempt to make up fr the loss, but that would be unfair to you guys (and would likely have killed us, since Genesis is proving to be one of those books that provides more questions than answers, thus far), so this week we're going to cover Genesis 4-6 (from Cain & Abel up to Noah being chosen to build the ark).

Since this is proving a bit more challenging than we'd anticipated, given our current RL scheduling, we're going to shoot for an entry every other week. With luck, this will allow us to get a bit ahead of the comm so we can start cranking these out faster. In the meantime, every other week will be more manageable for Laura and for myself.

A special note before we proceed, since we've noticed something important about this book: the Old Testament, and Genesis, in particular, was written for people who were already part of the culture, who would know certain things from experience. The followers of the religion would already have known certain things, so the need to include them in this account was likely not felt, which means that for people like us, who AREN'T as familiar with ancient Hebrew lore, a lot of terminology and events seem to pop up out of nowhere. If anyone reading this is well-versed in Jewish folktales and traditions, or knows someone who is and would be willing to comment, we'd REALLY love your input!

Without further ado:

Mod post: Hacker warning
by Lady Norbert (ladynorbert)
at March 6th, 2009 (11:36 am)

[Sorry there was no discussion this past weekend; I was very sick. Look for the next post to happen on Sunday as usual.]

There is some malware/virus going around LJ hacking accounts for mods in large communities that posts an announcement with links that says they are closing the community. Then proceeding to do so.

If you see an announcement purporting to be from the mods that this or any other community you are in is shutting down:

1) DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS - THEY ARE MALWARE/VIRUSES
2) REPORT THE POST TO LJ ABUSE WITH THE FLAG BUTTON
3) LET THE MODS OF THE COMMUNITY KNOW ASAP
4) DID I SAY DON'T CLICK LINKS? DON'T CLICK THE LINKS!!

Please report it if you see this going on here or elsewhere and let those mods know. They seem to mainly be attacking large communities, so we're probably safe, but I'm posting this to all the communities I moderate just in case.

First Lesson Plan: Genesis 1,2, & 3
by Gigi (oldschoollozfan)
at February 22nd, 2009 (07:32 pm)

May as well start at the beginning, right? Please read the above passages and let's have an open discussion on the themes presented. Genesis is a morality/creation story that's packed with rich mythology. Let's help each other to better understand the context and purpose to this epic tale!

Below is a list of observations and questions geared at getting you to start thinking the DEEP questions. Let us know if we got your mind spinning! And if you come up with other questions based on this section of Scripture, ask! All attempts at an explanation are welcome, and new questions are encouraged. We wanna know what you think! And most importantly, we want YOU to know what you think. The more you ponder on your faith, the stronger it will become over time!

Welcome and rules of conduct
by Lady Norbert (ladynorbert)
at February 8th, 2009 (06:28 pm)

Hi and welcome to enlightenus! We're glad you've come to share in this online Bible study with us. This post will explain the basic structure of the comm and outline our established rules.

Here's how we roll:

* Your moderators and community founders are ladynorbert and oldschoollozfan. Each Sunday, one of us will post a Bible passage here in the community. You are then encouraged to comment to that post to discuss what you think the verse means, how it relates to our lives today, what you personally get from it. Ask questions, learn from each other!

* By no means does the discussion have to end on one verse just because the next one goes up! As long as people have something to say about it, feel free to keep the conversation going.

* Although this is a Bible study, we want to stress that our membership is open to people of all faiths who are interested in learning more about the Judeo-Christian Bible and system of beliefs. We ask only that everyone come to the table with an open mind and a willingness to learn. No one would be turned away based on his or her beliefs (or lack thereof).

* With that in mind, we do expect everyone to treat everyone else with respect and consideration. Flames, trolling, etc. will result in mod action; depending on the severity of the offense, repercussions will range from a warning to outright banning.

* To that end, there will be no:

  • Insults or personal attacks of any kind
  • Offensive comments about ANY religion
  • Off-topic commenting -- this is a gray area; if, for instance, you bring up a movie or a book and explain how you feel it relates to the verse being discussed, that's fine. Going off on a fannish tangent, not so much.

* If you have a community that you would like to affiliate with this one, please leave a comment!

* Any questions not covered by these rules, leave a comment and we'll answer as soon as possible.
